Synopsis

PREFACE Particular Baptist Press is honored to present this important historical publication. It is not a trilogy, though it could have that appearance, rather it is a thesis by Dr. Edward Roustio on Indian Migration from the letters and journals of the celebrated Baptist missionary, Isaac McCoy (1784-1846), followed by two significantly related appendices. The historical importance of Isaac McCoy should never be minimized. His work was in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and finally Kentucky where, even up to his death, he remained active in Indian Affairs. Vol. XII of the Kansas Historical collections 1911-1912 accurately relates: "If one were to name the person who above all others had a guiding hand in the Indian affairs of the territory, it would be Isaac McCoy." Students of Isaac McCoy stand in awe and respect of his impeccable character and unrivaled accomplishments. The first appendix is an excellent study by Emory Lyons published by Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1945 also on Indian Migration. The addition of Lyon's work is a perfect compliment to Dr. Roustio's thesis. Both works deal with the same subject, however, each approach is unique and therefore of historical significance. Of Appendix B, is a history of the Maria Creek Baptist Church in Vincennes, Indiana. We admit the relationship is but partial, since appendix B has nothing to do with Indian Migration, however, it is another important addition concerning Isaac McCoy, as the pastorship was a first for both Maria Creek Baptist Church and Isaac McCoy. For those who are interested in Isaac McCoy, this has significance, but for those interested in Isaac McCoy as a Baptist missionary, this little church and its history is essential and we are honored to preserve its story.
