Bishop Heiser is a founding member of the Mars Society and currently serves on the Board of Directors and Steering Committee of that organization. He has also served in parish ministry for fourteen years and has been bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of North America since 2006.The essays in this volume focus on the relationship between Virtue and the establishment of a civilization and draw on the wisdom of philosophers, scientists and theologians of over twenty centuries to address the issues of expanding human civilization beyond the confines of Earth.

The Rt. Rev. James Heiser earned his B.A. in Political Science from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He worked for several years as a Research Associate at the National Center for Public Policy Research (D.C.), and as a Media Analyst for the Media Research Center (Alexandria, VA). Heiser earned his M.Div and S.T.M. from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Since his ordination in 1996, he has served as the ordained deacon of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church (Forsyth, IL), and, since 1998, as the pastor of Salem Lutheran Church (Malone, TX). Since 2005 he has been Dean of Missions of The Augustana Ministerium, and in 2006 he was called as bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of North America (ELDoNA). A founding member of the Mars Society, Heiser has served on that organization's Steering Committee since 2006 and joined its Board of Directors in 2010. Heiser's publications include two books, "The Office of the Ministry in N. Hunnius' Epitome Credendorum" (1996), and "A Shining City on a Higher Hill: Christianity and the Next New World" (2006), and numerous articles in "Logia," "Ad Astra," "The University Bookman," and other publications.
