The Canadian Mercantile Almanack for 1847: Including Ten Reasons for Emigrating to Canada and Additional 19th Century Advertisements was originally published in Niagara, Canada West, by J. Simpson in 1847. The edition most commonly encountered ? and the one most likely in hand ? is the facsimile reprint published by Copp Clark of Toronto in 1996. The original would be a standard almanac format, printed on cheap paper for immediate practical use, which is why original copies are essentially non-existent in the collector market; the Copp Clark reprint was produced specifically to make the document accessible to researchers and genealogists for whom it had become a reference tool. The Canadian Mercantile Almanack was one of many commercial almanacs produced in the mid-nineteenth century for the mercantile and farming communities of Upper Canada, combining the standard almanac apparatus ? calendars, astronomical tables, tide and weather information, postal rates, legal information, and commercial directories ? with promotional and practical material aimed at the specific concerns of an immigrant-receiving colony in the 1840s. The Ten Reasons for Emigrating to Canada, which gives the reprint edition its subtitle, was a promotional piece of the kind widely distributed by land agents, colonial boosters, and emigration societies throughout the period, designed to attract British settlers at a moment when Canada West was actively competing for immigrants with the United States and Australia. The 1847 date places the almanac precisely at the height of the Irish Famine emigration ? a context that gives the promotional material around emigration a significance its authors may not fully have anticipated, since 1847 was the single worst year of the Famine crossing, the year of the coffin ships and the fever sheds at Grosse-Île. The additional nineteenth-century advertisements included in the reprint document the commercial life of Niagara and the surrounding region: the tradespeople, merchants, professional services, and suppliers who served both the established population and the steady stream of arriving settlers. For genealogical researchers ? which accounts for the majority of the reprint's users ? these advertisements are often the only surviving record of specific tradespeople and small merchants who left no other documentary trace, making the almanac a primary source of real value for local and family history in the Niagara Peninsula.
