Acquired in 1980, the Max Tanenbaum collection features significant artworks from South Asia and the Himalayan region. The collection primarily includes Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist art, with a special emphasis on pieces from India, Nepal, and Tibet. This catalog showcases the spiritual and artistic heritage of the region through vibrant sculptures, paintings, and other objects of devotion. [From Preface by Pratapaditya Pal] [ . . . [U]pon familiarizing myself with the collection, I realized that writing an introduction to the arts of the Indian subcontinent, Nepal, and Tibet - the three regions represented in the collection - would not be an easy task. No single collection in any institution is complete enough to cover the entire history of art created in these areas. I have, therefore, organized the book in a manner intended to provide readers, especially those with little familiarity with the arts of the region, with sufficient background information to immerse themselves further in the extensive literature on the subject. To make it easier for the general reader, diacritical marks for Sanskrit words have been avoided in the text and Tibetan names have been spelled phonetically. The index, however, spells all such words in die proper academic mode. He completed his doctorate in Fine Arts and History from the University of Calcutta with a special focus on Nepal. In 1962, he received the Commonwealth Scholarship of Cambridge to do his second Ph.D. on Nepalese art. In 1967, Dr. Pal moved to the U.S. and took a curatorial position as the 'Keeper of the Indian Collection' at the renowned Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 1970, he joined the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and was there until he retired. Dr. Pal has written over 60 books on Asian art, with a sample of titles including, 'Art of the Himalayas: Treasures from Nepal and Tibet' (1992), 'The Peaceful Liberators: Jain Art from India' (1999), and 'The Arts of Kashmir' (2008). He has written over 200 papers on Asian Art. Dr. Pal is also a 2009 recipient of the Padma Shri Award, which is India's fourth highest civilian honor, for his extraordinary contribution to the sphere of art.
