A very politically correct asylum (The Centre for Cerebral Welfare) restricted to female patients is shocked when Alex, a Canadian man, arrives and claims that his brother, Boris, raised in Russia after their parents separated, is trying to kill him for stealing Olga, his lover. When he offers to pay handsomely for a hiding place, Jane (the owner) forgets the rule about female-only patients. Olga mistakes Alex for Boris, and the staff decide to hide Alex by disguising him as a woman and Boris falls in love with this new “woman” (played by a stand-in), but Olga, jealous, takes charge of him. The situation is compounded by a patient with multiple personalities, a new nurse given confusing instructions about treatment procedures, and an inspector paying a surprise visit.
