Synopsis

Colin Himpley, still called by his schoolboy nickname of Chimp by his family even though he is now 24, is tired of the way they behave. His mother, Wynn, calls him her baby and treats him accordingly. His fiancée, Sophie, insists that he should help her to plan every microscopic detail of their wedding (still months away), and his sister, Nancy, treats him as her personal servant and orders him to coach her latest boyfriend, Franklin, a psychiatrist, in his lines for a play in which he is to star. When Colin meets a French girl, Marie, who is helping Wynn in a fundraising drive, he realises what life could be like. He persuades his mother that he has turned into a chimpanzee, and she broadcasts this information, but he uses her behaviour to complain about the way she has always treated him. When he wins the lottery, Wynn, Sophie, Nancy and Franklin decide that they can have him certified and take over his affairs, but he is one step ahead of them and whisks Marie off to Paris. Franklin falls for Sophie, leaving Wynn and Nancy to dwell on what might have been.
