The Top of Whitley gives a detailed insight into the Spring Gardens area of Reading, Berkshire, England over a 160 year period, including the reminiscences of the author and 20 people who lived, worshipped, played or were educated in that part of Reading throughout the 20th century.
Daphne Barnes-Phillips, although not actually born in Spring Gardens, spent most of her early life within a mile of that area of Reading, was introduced to its Church, Whitley Hall Methodist, as a three year old and was to be associated with it for half a century.
