An essential work of reference for any student of British history and a fascinating narrative for the general reader, Dr Robert Franklin's revised edition of his biography of Lord Stuart de Rothesay is a significant contribution to 19th Century studies. Stuart was eminently suited to the career of a diplomat. He represented his country in Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands and Russia. In 1823 he helped to mediate between Portugal and Brazil and obtain, among other things, the recognition of Brazil's independence by the mother country. His last posting was as British Ambassador at the Court of the Tsar in St Petersburg. Apart from his notable achievements as a diplomat, Lord Stuart is probably best remembered for the creation of Highcliffe Castle in Dorset, one of the most important examples of Romantic and Picturesque architecture. After many years of neglect, this beautiful house has now been restored and opened to the public.
Robert Franklin was born in China and educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge and the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London. His other books, apart from the previous edition of Lord Stuart de Rothesay (1993), are The Stuarts of Highcliffe, (1998), The Fringes of History (2003), Private and Secret (Book Guild, 2005) and The Best General You Have (Book Guild, 2007). He has also contributed to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (2004).

Cloth, 8vo, 25 cm, 303 pp, 15 ills. From the blurb - "This book is an account of the life and times of a nineteenth century diplomat, Lord Stuart de Rothesay. He was an eccentric and - as the title that he chose for himself shows - a romantic. He knew the great men of his age, the age of the Napoleonic Wars on the continent of Europe and Reform at home, and he seems always to have managed to be where the action was, whether he should have been or not. He earned a reputation as a womaniser, but the women of his own family, specially his two charming and accomplished daughters, were devoted to him. The house that he built, Highcliffe, which gave its name to part of Christchurch, then in Hampshire and now in Dorset, was a Gothic monument to his eccentricity and romanticism.
