Synopsis

This book is a complete rewrite and extended version of the successful What is Person-Centred Therapy? By Tony Merry and Bob Lusty previously published by the Gale Centre. At almost twice the size of the original, it presents new, up-to-date material. It offers in-depth discussion of all aspects of person-centred counselling from its origins to current developments in theory and practice. The coverage of the topics is innovative, comprehensive and thorough. Tony Merry is renowned for his straightforward and accessible writing style, making this book suitable for a wide variety of readers. The clear presentation is augmented by end-of-chapter checklists and the book is brought to life with suggestions for exploring and developing person-centred values, qualities, attitudes and skills.

Revue de presse

I particularly enjoyed the theory sections in [Learning and Being] - and I valued the inclusion of cultural, political, professional and social issues at an early stage . . . I also valued the inclusion of the nineteen propositions in the Merry book, and the translations into more approachable language will, I think, be welcomed by trainees . . . I anticipate that trainees will especially welcome the additions to the Merry book about placements (chapter six, 'Training Issues: Client work and personal development') and Supervision (chapter seven). To give a flavour of these, Merry explores issues around many placement agencies offering time limited therapy and the difficulties trainees experience with this, offering helpful texts (including references to Brian Thorne) along the way. Many issues about seeking and experiencing supervision appear in the following chapter. I feel sure that trainees will also find the 'Resources' chapter in Merry helpful too - it leaves them with somewhere to go. --Steve Vincent, Person-Centred Practice
