This fascinating and thought-provoking book offers a unique insight into the hidden complexities of some people's lives. Individuals requiring personal support and their carers will identify with a number of issues that resonate with the reality of their own everyday experiences. Marlis Pörtner offers a practical vision of how to develop trust and understanding: qualities essential for a climate of empowerment and an increase in self-worth. I am pleased to recommend this book to all of you who endeavour to increase your trust and understanding in your own relationships with others. --Mandy Neville, Chief Executive, Circles Network, UK
We have chosen this accessible and insightful book to be our course text, and it has proved to be a consistently valuable and challenging tool for students. It has enabled a dialogue between social care workers, managers, and the people who benefit from services; facilitating clear communication and, as the book suggests, trust and understanding . The message within it is relevant to any individual or organisation offering help. --Terry Daly, University Lecturer, Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh
