Father and son Herbert and Hubert Allen together ran one of the largest independent operators of express services in Britain: not 'largest' in the number of vehicles owned - 50 was about the average size of the fleet over the years - but by the range of services offered and the area covered by their operation. Their coaches could, by the 1970s, be seen on regular services as far as Glasgow in the north, Paignton in the southwest, Clacton in the southeast, and in nearly every seaside resort along the coast from Ramsgate to Torquay, plus north Devon, north and south Wales and not forgetting Blackpool, Morecambe and Southport. Their yellow and orange coaches came almost exclusively from AEC until the latter was no longer available, and then Leylands were bought. The story is from 1932 until the end of the 1980s, by which time Yelloway was under new ownership and in decline. Venture's regular writer on express coaching matters, Keith Healey, produced his usual authoritative text to bring this story to life, and a fine selection of illustrations is included.
