The finished paintings and fluid oil sketches of John Constable, R.A. are well known but his considerable output of drawings, many of them of the greatest beauty, is much less familiar. This book explores this area of his art in a comprehensive manner and contains much new material. Written by Ian Fleming-Williams, who co-organised the 1976 and 1991 Tate Gallery Constable exhibitions, there are introductory essays by three other scholars in the field: Anne Lyles of the Tate Gallery yses and compares the drawings of Constable's contemporaries; Jane McAusland, a conservator and restorer of art on paper, explores the papers and drawing materials available to artists in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and the artist Patrick Heron discusses his personal response to Constable's draughtsmanship.
Many of the drawings have never before been made available to the public.
