Soft cover. Etat : Fair. "This is a story about France during the desperate years which followed her defeat and occupation by Germany in the summer of 1940. The British army had been evacuated at Dunkirk, along with a small number of French soldiers who were soon joined by General de Gaulle. The French Government surrendered, ordering all its servicemen to lay down their arms. France was divided in two, the northern part, including Brittany, to be under German occupation, and in the south a puppet government was set up in Vichy under Marshal Pétain. General de Gaulle was condemned by the Vichy Government as a traitor for broadcasting an appeal to Frenchmen to join his Free French forces to fight the Germans. Ordinary French men and women were faced with the unenviable choice of obeying their government which was collaborating with the Germans, or risking their lives by aiding those in what soon became known as the Resistance in the hope of defeating them."Ex military library stock so expect to see light wear and possible markings and annotations in the text.
