Synopsis

A "behind the microphone" look at one of the most successful offshore radio stations that broadcast as LASER 558 and Laser Hot Hits in the 1980s. The author helped build Laser and many of the stations that broadcast from the ship. He explains the programming used by other offshore stations such as Radio Caroline, and Swinging Radio England which Laser emulated. How this left a big gap that laser could exploit. The station attracted an audience of almost ten million within months of launch; the format, the hot clocks and programming techniques are all discussed in some detail and there are biographical details and photographs of every voice heard on the station. The final part of the book looks at the subsequent users of the Laser name and the position of offshore radio in 2017. Today's radio programming shortfalls are also debated and the re is an appendix containing the Laser 558 Operations Manual.Essential reading for anyone interested in radio programming and how to build a big audience.
