Demetri Porphyrios, principal of Porphyrios Associates, is one of the world's leading architects. His architecture of humanism has given us new insights into the use of tradition and modernity. For him, 'architecture always speaks of tradition in a modern voice that invites commentary and ferrets out the new.' Many have spoken of the connection between tectonics and form, but almost no one has put this into practice with the richness and maturity of Porphyrios. 'Architecture,' he writes, 'makes us see the building craft and technology from which it is born, from which it detaches itself as art, and to which it always alludes.' His architecture is not about style; rather, it is about living traditions open to adaptation and responsive to region, climate, nature and culture. The work presented in this volume covers a comprehensive selection of buildings and urban projects carried out by his practice in the past five years including the new Quadrangle at Magdalen College, Oxford, the New Courts, Auditorium and Library at Selwyn College, Cambridge, the Brindleyplace Office Buildings, and a number of urban projects for resort towns and inner city developments both in the UK and abroad. Introductions by the historian and architect Professor Paolo Portoghesi and by Dr. Oswyn Murray, Fellow at Balliol College, Oxford, examine his work. 'The work of Porphyrios,' writes Paolo Portoghesi, 'has a quality of creativity which finds itself not in academic repetitions but in the classical as a way of life. His work has a spontaneity and a capacity to adapt itself to a place and of expressing the harmony between man and nature.'
Demetri Porphyrios has an international reputation as an architect and theorist. He has built in England, Europe, the Middle East and America and has received many awards and honorary degrees for his excellence in architectural and urban design. He was educated at Princeton University where he received his master of Architecture and Ph.D. in the History and Theory of Architecture. He holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Notre Dame and he has been Thomas Jefferson Professor at the University of Virginia and Davenport and Bishop Professor at Yale University. He has taught at the Architectural Association, the Polytechnic of Central London and the Royal College of Art. He is a Member of the Council of the Green Archaeological Committee (UK), Trustee of the Saint Catherine Foundation, Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Member of Europa Nostra and Member of the Society of Architectural Historians. He has recently been appointed Member of CABE Design Review Committee and in 2005 was awarded the Driehaus International Prize in Architecture. His publications include Sources of Modern Eclecticism; On the Methodology of Architectural History; Classicism is not a Style; Building and Rational Architecture and Classical Architecture.
