Antoine Chrysostôme Quatremère de Quincy (1755-1849) was one of the most influential French art and architectural theorists. His career included programmes to reform the Académie, the transformation of the church of Sainte-Geneviève into the French Pantheon, his magisterial contribution to the Encyclopédie Méthodique of C.J. Panckoucke (1788-1825), his archaeological restitutions of various ancient monuments, and his unprecedented hegemony over the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. This book provides the first English translation of the theoretical essays from his seminal work, Le Dictionnaire Historique d'Architecture of 1832. The importance of this Dictionnaire stems from Quatremère's profound reflections on the nature and ends of architecture; on the principles which are at the source of her rules, and on the roles of imitation and invention within tradition.
This is not merely a repertory of ancient words and sounds; it is a living inventory of all those concepts and ideas without which there can be no true architecture as art or craft. --Léon Krier
This is a seminal analysis of the ideas of Quatremère de Quincy and of the profound implications they have for contemporary architectural theory. --Demetri Porphyrios
Quatremère was one of the most important and prolific writers on architectural and artistic theory of his age, but virtually none of his writings has ever been translated into English, and his complex ideas are little understood. Samir Younés brilliant interpretation of him and his translation of key entries from his Historical Dictionary of Architecture, including the celebrated essay on 'character' will thus be vital aids to modern architects and architectural writers. --David Watkin
