When I was young, all our family lived together in a typical Chinese house laid out around a big traditional rectangular courtyard and I still have memo ries of my grandfather pacing up and down in front of his surgery when treating particularly difficult cases saying to himself over and over again "We must seek out the root." Back then, we all had the greatest respect for grandfather and would not dare to ask him just what he meant by this. Only years later as I began my training did the full meaning of these words come home to me. Life revolved around the surgery, which meant that we always had visitors to our house. Rich or poor, scholars or peasants, they all benefited from my grandfather's prowess, irrespective of their wealth or status.
