Black Rigg by Mary Easson is set in a Scottish mining village in the year 1910. The story unfolds during the period of social and economic change when the foundations of modern Scotland were being laid, as working people and women began to challenge the status quo and as the landowners, the church and the justice system resisted change. Issues such as class, power, injustice, poverty, and community are raised by the narrative in powerful and dramatic style. Black Rigg sets the scene for a two book sequel covering the years of WW1 and its aftermath. Black Rigg is destined to become the standard exposition of the multi-layered levels of Scottish social mores and manners across all classes in the rapidly changing years of the early 20th Century. Mary Easson is more incisive than Mrs Gaskell and more realistic than previous couthy accounts of this period. A fascinating guide and a great read.
