1974 was the year Tom Baker became Dr Who, Brian Clough became manager of Leeds United and then departed and Abba won Eurovision with Waterloo. On TV Happy Days, Bagpuss, Porridge and The Six Million Dollar Man made their debut while Mud were walking high in the music charts with Tiger Feet. It was also the year President Nixon resigned, Britains first Macdonalds opened and Volkswagen launched the Golf.

David Simpson is a former journalist and is the author of over thirty books on British history, topography and culture. He has published titles on London and Scotland as well as publications featuring British nostalgia, history and popular tastes from the 1940s to the 1990s. His special interest is the North East of England where he has entertained and lectured widely on the subject of dialect and place-names. David has appeared in over a hundred television and radio broadcasts both locally and nationally. Richard Callaghan was born in Durham City and educated at Birmingham and Glasgow Universities. He is the author of over twenty books. He has written both for adults and for a family audience on a whole host of subjects including both global and local history. Richard is co-author of the My Year series of books featuring events, culture and current affairs from the 1940s to the late 1990s.
