Hermann Buchner was born in Salzburg in 1919, and joined the Austrian air force in 1937. Following the annexation of his home country by Nazi Germany, he continued his career in the Luftwaffe. He served as an instructor and fighter-bomber pilot with SchG 1 and SG2, during the course of which he shot down 46 Russian aircraft and destroyed 47 armoured vehicles, mostly in the Crimea. Awarded the King's Cross for over 600 operational missions, he transferred to JG 7 as a Me262 pilot. He then fought against the RAF and USAAF on home-defence duties and made another 12 kills, to make him one of the highest scoring jet fighter aces. He died in 2005, aged 86.
