This new book in the series of Practical Handbooks from the Council for British Archaeology tackles the subject of the historic landscape. In it, Stephen Rippon reveals the techniques that can and have been used to analyse the history of the countryside, accompanied by a series of case studies. The book is a guide to local and regional variation in the countryside and the approaches and methods used to reach an understanding of it, as well as a discussion of how and why certain patterns have emerged. Stephen Rippon is Professor of Landscape Archaeology at the University of Exeter, and President of the Society for Medieval Archaeology. His main research interests cover the Romano-British and medieval landscapes of Britain, and the origins of today’s countryside.
