Synopsis
Often considered to have been the creation of William Gibson in his seminal novel """"Necromancer,"""" the subgenre of cyberpunk can be traced back into the history of science fiction from the 1950s to the late 1970s, and emerged in reaction to the world of the 1980s. This new Pocket Essential guide looks in detail at the movers and shakers in the cyberpunk movement, from the early days of Gibson and Bruce Sterling through the feminist and British versions of the genre to the post- cyberpunk era. It also examines important genre films such as Blade Runner and The Matrix.

Andrew M Butler is Senior Lecturer Media and Cultural Studies at Canterbury Christ Church University College and author of the Pocket Essentials Terry Pratchett, Philip K Dick, Cyberpunk and, with Bob Ford, Postmodernism. He was the winner of the 2004 Pioneer Award and would collect shiny trousers in his spare time if he had any.
