Dermatological surgery is practised routinely in primary care, and most minor procedures are straightforward and require minimal time. Success is dependent on the practitioner's ability to recognize lesions, choose and plan appropriate treatment and surgical interventions, and perform surgical procedures. Fast Facts: Minor Surgery, second edition provides an overview of the good practice and operative set-up required for dermatological surgery, the skin lesions commonly encountered in primary care and the various techniques and procedures involved in their treatment.

With an increasing amount of dermatological surgery being performed in primary care, this book represents a valuable contribution to the teaching of techniques. In a clear and concise manner it summarizes those lesions suitable for primary care surgery, the necessary instruments and techniques as well as trips to avoiding complications. The pathological images are clear and the diagrams and tables transfer the important messages about the techniques. The sections advising on the danger areas and those areas prone to poor healing and scarring particularly impressed me. Application of the rules that this book advises would result in appropriate surgery being performed in primary care and those necessary for referral for secondary care. Similarly, the section on the audit of procedures performed and keeping accurate notes represents good clinical practice. The sections on suturing techniques and models of excision contain many images that accurately convey the message. With many general practitioners (GPs) having received little or no surgical training, this book explains the important facts and demonstrates the levels of good practice that can be achieved. I would recommend this to any GP considering practising dermatological surgical techniques in their surgery. It should also be recommended to junior staff in emergency departments who practice surgery under local anaesthetic following trauma. --The Journal of the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health, September 2002 on the 1st edition.
Winner of the Primary Health Care section of the BMA Book Awards 2008. This concise, up to date, well-illustrated text represents excellent value for money. It s very practical and full of essential details: eg skin tension lines, suture materials, cryotherapy times etc. It s unique in being able to pack so much relevant information into such a small volume which makes it highly readable. --BMA Book Awards 2008
