In response to changing patterns of land use, deer are increasing in numbers and in distribution throughout much of the UK and continental Europe (as also in North America). At the same time awareness of deer and their impact is also increasing; new problems are arising and new solutions must be sought. This book is an attempt to present some of the results of recent scientific research into deer and their management and show how that increased understanding may be used to develop more informed and more effective management for the future. It reviews the factual evidence about deer numbers and their impact as pests of agriculture, forestry and conservation habitats and seeks to assess the actual economic significance of damage caused (dispelling a few cherished myths along the way). It then reviews the options for management of deer and their environment - for control of damage, for control of deer numbers or for exploitation - and carefully assesses the advantages and disadvantages of each available option. A final section, co-written with Dr Jochen Langbein, reviews new scientific knowledge of the ecology and behaviour of park deer and implications of this new knowledge in management of these park populations a topic which has never really been given proper attention in previous works on deer management. In a professional life of 25 years working as a deer biologist Professor Rory Putman has worked at one time or another with most of the British and European species of deer and in a whole variety of contexts. He has had a wealth of first hand experience of working with deer and the effectiveness of different approaches to management, and is this book is an attempt to share the results of that work. Despite its scientific basis, the book is emphatically not written for an academic audience, but is deliberately aimed at the practitioner. The whole object of this book in essence is to try to offer the manager, in simple language, the benefits of a great deal of recent research on deer and their management and to show how that increased knowledge and understanding may be harnessed to improve our management both of deer populations, and of the damage they may cause.
