Since the onset of the HIV epidemic just under three decades ago there have been many significant advances in therapy, most notably the development of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). This has transformed what was a terminal illness into a manageable chronic disease, at least in those countries where these treatments are available. It remains the case however, that in many parts of the world the combination of inadequate programmes of public health education, and limited access to effective therapies, ensures that HIV remains a threat not only to the local population but to visitors too, and consequently to the wider world.
