Soft cover. Etat : New. xxxvi, 297 pages : colour illustrations ; 25 cm. In the 1720s and 1730s the archdeacons in York diocese travelled extensively to inspect the churches under their jurisdiction, inspecting the condition of the building fabric, checking that the parish had all the necessary furnishings, books and vessels, and making orders for things to be put right. This edition of the returns from the archdeaconries of the East Riding and York represents the material that survives in the diocesan archives for the 1720s and 1730s, and offers the opportunity to see the state of the local church at that period. It is particularly rich in giving details of parish libraries. An introduction gives the background to parochial visitation and discusses what the returns reveal about the state of the church. An appendix gives the itineraries of the archdeacons. N° de réf. du vendeur PGYORK03
