Aidan Doyle has written a book, The Great Northern Coalfield: Mining Collections at Beamish Museum, which both explores the story of mining across this millennium span, and serves as a guide to the collections related to coal held in the North of England Open Air Museum at Beamish. He is an artist and sociologist, and this book stems from his enthusiasm for 'things which make places different'. He is currently working with the Institute for Research on Environment and Sustainability at the University of Newcastle, engaging the public in popular science projects.
This book explores the story of mining in the North East region of the UK, from its beginnings right up to the cliosure of Ellington Colliery, Northumberland in 2005. This was the last major mine in what was known as 'The Great Northern Coalfield', which, for hundreds of years, provided fuel and employment, consolidated communities and created a unique regional culture. A culture which has now been consigned to history. It also serves as a guide to the coal collections held at the Beamish Museum.
