Synopsis
The Arctic Stories pack is full of thoughtful activities to help children learn about the ecosystem of the Arctic and understand how the indigenous peoples relate to it. Supported by a teachers handbook and a book of photocopy masters, this mixed media pack contains a wonderful variety of resources including two A3 colour culturegrams, full of clues, hints and information about the Inuit people to get children started on their research. Designed to promote the skills based curriculum it has a particular focus on thinking and communication skills, promoting visual, audio and kinaesthetic learning. Listen to the Ihalmiuts stories on CD, dramatise role-play scripts, use photocopiable worksheets to accompany the activities and view a Powerpoint presentation of Arctic images. Pupils will have the opportunity to develop their ICT skills in finding and analysing information, creating a Wiki and presenting their own news item for Newsround. Also included in the pack are five copies of the storybook The Gifts of Kaila a creation story written and illustrated by the Ihalmiut people, designed to deepen children s understanding of the Ihalmiut and their beliefs, and also provide opportunities for guided reading. Most of the activities require children to work collaboratively in pairs or groups, where they are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and that of others. This is a great cross-curricular pack!
