Synopsis
'At my Devon school, lessons were optional and I did not go to a lot. A friend's father took us to Buckfastleigh racecourse where there were bookmakers and tic-tac men, Tote windows and people asking each other what they knew (at school, people only told you what you did not know). I became hooked'. Sir Clement Freud is a man of many parts, but his devotion to racing and betting has been lifelong and unwavering. He has owned several racehorses, one of whom was named Weareagrandmother after Margaret Thatcher's announcement of the birth of her first grandchild. He has ridden in races and has been a fearless punter, winning a fortune after backing himself to win the 1973 Ely by-election at 33-1.
