Synopsis

This epic spy novel follows the military career of William Johnston and records his exploits in Russia, Singapore and Borneo as a member of the Royal Marines. From an early stage in his career Johnston becomes embroiled in surveillance of the Russian Navy and is involved in setting up an undercover observation post on the coast of Western Russia. Later, on assignment in Singapore and Borneo his suspicions are aroused when he recognises an officer who he thought had died in Russia, and on his return to England Johnston is again sent north. Alone this time, his mission is to destroy the observation post. He succeeds and attempts to escape, but it soon becomes apparent that he is being manipulated on his long and harrowing journey. Eventually, Johnston is arrested, tortured and put on trial, where he recognises an English officer in the court room. Sentenced to death, Johnston is instead sucked back into the Russian penal system where he has to fight for survival for many years. He escapes the labour camp and makes his way to Norway, where he lives peacefully until a spy catcher from London arrives. Graham Watkins, the spy catcher, has been alerted to Johnston s existence by the arrival in England of a would-be defector. This leads Watkins to discover a manuscript, written by Johnston, recording his military career and his suspicions about high ranking officers in the British Secret Service who are in fact working for the Russians. When Johnston and Watkins meet the events of the intervening years are filled in by Johnston, who admits to eliminating the two double agents. A deal is struck and Watkins returns home. Johnston is left to get on with his new life until his past catches up with him once again.
