Synopsis

Frederick Cornes was one of the most successful British import/export traders in Japan, not least in the early years of commerce with the West in the 1860s and 70s. Initially based on his expertise in trading in Japanese silk and tea, the Cornes company pioneered the import of Lancashire cottons into Japan, as well as metal products, coals and kerosene. Later, amongst a widely diverse portfolio, including property, Cornes introduced British insurance products, establishing his company as the first representative for Lloyds. By the time of his retirement he had amassed a considerable fortune. Cornes lived in Yokohama from 1861 to 1865 and again after 1871 for various periods until 1911 when he retired and returned permanently to England. During the times he was resident in London, he conducted his business via a weekly correspondence with his partner or senior manager in Yokohama. Remarkably, this has survived in the form of 119 Copy Books, as well as two volumes of Private Letter Books, making a total of over 7000 pages of correspondence. The volume also includes an account of trade and early Meiji Japan, a guide to the topics, problems and personalities referred to in the Copy Books, a short biography of Frederick Cornes, extracts from Cornes Business Letters, and various appendices.

Peter N. Davies is Emeritus Professor of Economic History at Liverpool University. A former President of both the International Commission for Maritime History and of the International Maritime Economic History Association, he has also served as a Visiting Professor at Musashi University, Tokyo, and at Shudo University, Hiroshima. His published works include studies of major Liverpool shipping companies and (with Tomohei Chida) of the Japanese shipping and shipbuilding industries.
