Synopsis

In the UK lockdown of 2020 for reasons he cannot explain, Russell Raphael gave a series of online lectures on the novel Ulysses by James Joyce. He had never done anything like that before but it was a crazy time, so he was a little crazy. They were received quite well and people that had thought Ulysses to be a book beyond them finished it and with a sense of achievement. The lectures are published in this book. They are refined a little but generally as delivered.
The aim was to make Ulysses accessible to the normal reader and the lectures sit alongside episodes in the book to compliment the reading experience. Most of the trickier aspects are covered if not totally then sufficiently so as to demystify and it is hoped give pleasure and even a laugh or two. Ulysses is after all a very funny book.
Russell doubts there is a definitive understanding of Ulysses but lovers of books ought to be able to read it and form a personal understanding. It is hoped that these lectures will help.
This second edition make some stylistic correction but seeks to preserve the integrity and freshness of the lectures as given.
Russell is founder of North London Ulysses, a group that meets weekly in pubs to read Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. He is also the author of The Fine Trousers of Almidano Artifoni, a poetry collection based on the Wandering Rocks chapter of Ulysses.
