Synopsis

The number of children and young people remanded to custody has increased over recent years. This timely study explores the use of foster care as an alternative to custodial and residential accommodation for young people on remand. The study focuses on a remand fostering scheme in the south of England, and is based on detailed interviews with young people who have been remanded to foster care, remand foster carers and lay youth court magistrates. It considers how young people become involved in offending behaviour, how this behaviour can be exacerbated by involvement with the penal system, and how community interventions like remand foster care can have a positive impact on a young person’s behaviour and sense of identity. The findings of this challenging study of what is often a politically contentious issue have implications for all those working in the youth justice system and will also be of interest to social workers, policy makers, politicians and decision makers in this field.
