Thousands of people have read Nancy Verrier’s classic The Primal Wound and found profound insights on what being adopted means to adopted people. Verrier explored the primal wound that results when a child is separated from their mother and examined the life-long consequences this can have. Now, Coming Home to Self explores the effect of separation trauma on brain development, and how to heal the primal wound.
The book aims to help adopted people find their authentic self and break the barriers of trauma that may prevent them achieving a mature and satisfying adulthood. By understanding what it means to live without genetic markers and mirroring (being reflected back) through growing up in non-biological families, adopted people can build their self-esteem and closer personal relationships.
Although today there is more insight into what adoption means for all those involved, there is still little understanding of how to deal with the hurt that many adopted children have experienced. For adopted people, fear of rejection (abandonment) affects intimacy, with some adopted people distancing themselves from the vulnerability of relationships. This can bewilder parents, spouses and partners – and even the adoptees themselves. For too long, adoptees have been puzzled by their attitudes, feelings and behaviours. This book offers solutions to regulating troubling emotions and achieving meaningful relationships.
