Synopsis

"The Liquid Continent," whose three volumes can be read independently, combines travel narrative, history and reflection on the contemporary Mediterranean. Beginning in Alexandria, the author travels overland around the eastern rim of the sea. Wherever he goes he finds traces of an older, sophisticated existence; he soon comes to see the great eastern ports as the globalized cities of an age when the Mediterranean was the centre of the known world. It leads him to the realization that our own version of globalization is not the only one possible. In the people and places of Alexandria he encounters not one great past, but two: the world of Cleopatra and Ptolomaic learning, symbolized by Alexandria's ancient library and lighthouse, and a more recent, highly cosmopolitan city, built on 20th century trade and destroyed by Nasser's socialist revolution.

À propos de l'auteur

Nicholas Woodsworth was born in Ottawa, Canada in 1953 and grew up in a diplomatic family in Africa and Asia. He graduated in Asian history. He began newspaper freelancing after settling in Aix-en-Provence in his mid-20s. He became the Financial Times Africa Correspondent in the late 1980s, and was the Weekend FT's staff travel writer from 1989 to 2003. His interest in the Mediterranean, since expanded to include the entire region, began with his marriage to his Provencal wife.
