Although many of the poems in this pamphlet focus on illness and mortality, and regret for an unlived life and a future the poet will be denied, there a beauty and a humour in this negativity. Skilfully translated by David Colmer, who worked closely with Wigman on Window-cleaner Sees Paintings, this pamphlet is a fitting tribute to a greatly-admired and much-missed poet.

Menno Wigman was born in North Holland in the town of Beverwijk in 1966 and is one of the most respected and popular Dutch poets of his generation. A former poet laureate of Amsterdam, he attracts a wide audience for his books and readings. Wigman is also active as a musician and an editor and has translated the work of Rilke, Baudelaire and others into Dutch. He has published five full-length collections, with Slordig met geluk (2016) as the most recent, and has won several major prizes. His poetry has appeared internationally in many magazines and anthologies and there are French and German selections of his work, L'affliction des copyrettes and Im Sommer stinken alle Städte, published in 2010 and 2016 respectively.
