The Devils Backbone (2001) is a Gothic story written and directed by Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, 2006) concerning a ghost who haunts the corridors of an isolated orphanage during the Spanish Civil War. Studying The Devils Backbone explores the narrative in relation to the central concerns of film studies: genre, theme, iconography, representation and film language. Through these elements, the text provides a close textual analysis of the films generic blend of the literary Gothic with the Western and the War film, the use of bombs, ghosts, and colour as visual signifiers, a critique of the central characters and how their relationships construct representations of women, monsters and films political context of the Spanish Civil War alongside an examination into the mise-en-scene, sound and special effects. In addition to this, the author provides a critical biography of the director, an analysis of his auteurist traits and an in-depth bibliography and filmography of related texts.
