JACKIE HAYDEN s career has been one of two halves, the first in the record industry and the second straddling the media and work in the inducation of people seeking careers in music. As Marketing Manager with Sony Ireland through the seventies he handled major national marketing campaigns for some of the top acts in the world, such as Abba, Bob Dylan, Madonna, The Clash, Simon and Garfunkel, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen etc.. He signed U2 to their first record contract in 1979. In 1983 he became a director and General Manager of Hot Press, Ireland s premier rock culture magazine. On behalf of the Irish government he was invited by Michael D Higgins, now Ireland s president, to serve on a Task Force to explore ways in which government could assist Irish musicians, and was appointed Chairman of a government committee to examine the International Marketing of Irish Music. He was given a special Music Industry Award in 1993 for his services to Irish music, and in 1992 an award from RTE 2 fm, Ireland s national rock music station, for similar reasons. He set up the renowned MIX (Music Industry Xplained) course to educate musicians about the workings of the music industry and the music media. It is now in its 12th year. He has lectured on the music industry and the music media in universities and at seminars all over Ireland and in the UK, Spain, Germany, France and the USA. He also writes press releases, confidential band assessments and devises marketing plans for record companies, managers and artists. His latest book My Boy-The Philip Lynott Story (written with Philomena Lynott and telling the story of the late Thin Lizzy rock star), reached the top of the Irish book charts in 2011. He has also written and edited several books on music and other topics and is currently completing one on the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Now contributing editor to Hot Press, his First Cuts column exclusively covers new artists, mostly Irish, although he has also written about Welsh acts like Ail Symudiad, Lowri Evans, Chilo Sim and Charcoal Sun. He reviews CDs by international artists and is regularly invited by radio stations in Ireland and elsewhere to share his insights into the world of contemporary music.
This biographical travel writing is a very personal view of Dylan Thomas Wales through the eyes of a Celtic Cousin. Inside this book is a free CD of a script recorded and performed at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive (the birthplace of Dylan Thomas) by the Archdruid of Wales Jim Parc Nest. The manuscript began life as a script for a recording for production of a CD. The concept is an addition to the biographical canon of work about Dylan Thomas focused upon the areas in Wales (and the world) to which Thomas is associated (and lay claim to him). The author wrote a script that was recorded in the room in the house on Cwmdonkin Drive where Thomas was born. The script is recorded by Archdruid Jim Parc Nest (T. James Jones) and is enhanced with musical recordings. The author has developed the content of the script into a piece of travel writing that has extra material and is illustrated by photographs. The narrative of this travel writing is informed by the Irish author s passion for Thomas and his work and his own experience of the sense of place of the locations of which he writes.
