This book traces the history of the cotton mills at Stanleyand their links with historically important fi gures such asRichard Arkwright, David Dale and Robert Owen of NewLanark. It also examines Stanley’s links with the cottonindustry in the West of Scotland, in Lancashire and withthe Dundee jute industry. Cotton was a global industry andStanley Mills exported their products as far afi eld as India,North and South America, South Africa and Australia. Thissecond edition has been considerably rewritten and expandedto take account of new research and new discoveries since itwas first published in 2003.

The Author

Anthony Cooke was formerly Senior Lecturer in Continuing Education, University of Dundee and served as Historical Consultant to Historic Scotland on the Heritage Lottery funded restoration of the mills. He is the author of The Rise and Fall of the Scottish Cotton Industry, 1778-1914, (Manchester, 2010) and of The History of Drinking: The Scottish Pub since 1700 (Edinburgh 2015), which has been shortlisted for the Saltire Society’s History Book of the Year Award 2015.
