There was a long held belief in Andrew Henderson's family that, at the time of the French Revolution, an ancestor may have received from Marie Antoinette, a mysterious gift. What happened to that gift is unknown. While on a visit to South Africa, Henderson, a well-known London brewer, discovers information suggesting that the story may well be true and that the gift may be of considerable value. With the aid of a South African girl, Jenny Stanley, he decides to follow up the information and get to the bottom of the mystery. At the same time, a petty criminal in Paris discovers similar information in the French State Archives. He is overheard discussing it by a Frenchwoman with connections to Henderson's relations and she suggests they get together and find out more about the truth of the story. As both parties pursue their searches in South Africa, London, Suffolk and Yorkshire, two things become clear. The gift was of greater value than realised and the two search parties had become aware of each others intentions towards it. This results in a frantic chase to the west coast of Scotland and an unexpected conclusion.
