Not a conventional history book, but a collection of anecdotes and snippets spun together to create a captivating series of tales, this book tells the story of England in a unique way: through its fascinating and colourful inn signs. Expect the unexpected! Read how each sign, a work of art in its own right, represents a small piece of England's history, its cultural, political and scientific achievements, its heroes and villains, its personalities both real and legendary, and its ancient customs and folklore. (Did you know: the first "official" inn sign, the White Hart, was the emblem of King Richard II.) Take a random tour of England, through London, the picturesque cathedral cities, old market towns, quaint little villages and places of scenic beauty. Visit its legacy of inns and experience first hand the atmosphere of those special places where history was made. Indeed, every inn sign is a part of the true treasury that is England's heritage. Enhanced by extracts from favourite poems written over many centuries, The Hart of England is illustrated throughout with photographs of hundreds of signs. A must for everyone who loves England!
Pete Coxon was born in Middlesbrough in 1947. Married with a son and two daughters he now lives in York, but has recently spent much of his time travelling throughout England and many other countries. After a career in finance, he has spent much of his time writing and illustrating. An active member of York Art Society and until recently the editor of its quarterly magazine, he has sold several paintings at exhibitions. His first book is entitled York's Historic Inns, which is the story of a city and its people woven around its inns and public houses. His second book, Landlords and Rogues, gives an anecdotal account of 19th century life. Passionate about unearthing history, Pete has explored the lives and times of his ancestors back to Tudor times. Over the last few years he has been a regular contributor to the Good Pub Guide and is a member of the Inn Sign Society. The Hart of England is his latest work, and describes English life, history and culture, illustrated throughout by photographs of inn signs taken on his travels.
