Présentation de l'éditeur

Up to the late 19th century, caravans and living vans had been used merely for mobile accommodation for travelling workers such as fair operators, salesmen and roaming gypsy folk. It was not until 1885 that the founder of leisure touring caravanning, Dr. William Gordon Stables, first took to the road in his horse drawn caravan, The Wanderer. It heralded the beginning of a craze that would grow into a multi-million pound industry. The Little Book of Caravans tells the history and development of the industry and recounts those journeys, including pioneering tours, that covered great distances across Europe, Scandinavia and into the Soviet Union, before the Second World War and during the 50s and 60s. Between 1954 and the 1970s, Road Rallying bevame a well-patronized sport both with participants and spectators, pitting the wits of driver, car and caravan through arduous obstacle courses and race circuits. Today the early days of touring are celebrated through the classic caravan fraternity, and as with all pastimes that create enormous enthusiasm amongst the dedicated followers, there are a huge number of associated items of memorabilia, trophies and ephemera. Club pennants, log books, tea sets and of course that indispensable item, the chemical loo, all go to make this a diverse and engaging art of motoring history.
