For each type of record, it describes the background to their compilation, and the categories of people and data included. It also provides background on the social history of County Clare and how this history has affected the keeping and survival of records.

Brian Smith is a researcher, writer and lecturer on Irish genealogy and local history, and is a principal in Flyleaf Press. In addition to 'Tracing your Dublin Ancestors' and 'Tracing your Mayo Ancestors', he has also written 'The Streets of Glasthule', Co. Dublin and 'Historical Street Directory of Kingstown/ Dun Laoghaire' Co. Dublin. The latter was a Millennium Project with Dun Laoghaire Borough Historical Society. He has also contributed many articles to genealogical and local history journals. Gerry Kennedy MA, BSc has had a lifelong interest in Local and Family History, especially of Clare and East Galway. In 2005 he obtained an MA in History of Family from the University of Limerick. Following thirty years of hobby involvement in local history and genealogy, he has been working full time as a genealogist since 2010. As well as offering a professional genealogical research service, Gerry also researches house and building histories in Clare. He has also published articles on his local area in The Other Clare magazine. He is also an active member and current chairman of Clare Roots Society, and a founding member of Heritage Inchicronan and has recently published the baptism records for the Clare parish of Crusheen (1860-1880) online on wwww.crusheen.com.
