Alex Wyndham Baker has been pin-balling around the planet for the last twenty years or so working variously as a barman in LA, TV reporter in Bangkok, magazine editor in Hong Kong, copywriter in Nairobi, mojito vendor in Barcelona, hotel inspector in India and English teacher in the Galapagos. He started writing Cursiveafter a climbing accident in Kenya incapacitated him for a year and currently lives in England with his fiancée and a limp. The pen exists and has, for Alex, certain talismanic properties.
In 1933, Ralph leaves England for a year in East Africa, a test of character forced upon him by his fiancee's father. We follow his adventures through his letters to Lillian, written with her parting gift - a Mabie Todd Blackbird ink pen - as he takes up his position with The Company. Between these letters Wyndham Baker weaves full-throttle contemporary vignettes following the pen's legacy of lost love 60 years later, culminating in an ending both deeply moving and satisfying.
