Woman Master is a story set in Iran. There are certainly issues here; infanticide, drug-addiction, rape, abortion, prostitution and human trafficking, sexual abuse in a holy place; and more.
But Woman Master is not an examination of issues, it is a story revolving around Pari; the beating heart of the novel, her innocence, her hard-won wisdom, her capacity to love, her journey from a love-struck wealthy teenager who elopes with a man who already has a first wife waiting at home, her life as a second wife, the Zan-Arbab (Woman Master) of her husband s village, her life when her husband moves a third wife into the house to bear him children; something Pari never could. When she loses everything she has to move to Tehran where she becomes a virtual slave to a cousin who was once a cherished friend. It is the way that Pari remains that defines the characters and events, and indeed the novel itself. The structure of the novel is deeply entwined with the themes. The focus is always the characters, their fate, the struggles and the joys that define their lives.
It is not until the final line of the novel that the identity of the narrator is revealed. It will be difficult and shocking to some. It may even engender a feminist fatwa as it presents a very uncomfortable truth; but it makes no apologies and apportions no blame. The beauty of the novel is that it is left to the reader to decide whether the narrator of the book is a victim of some madness or whether she found love. Can violence and obsession really fuse into impossible tenderness?
Mehrnaz Stars has worked as an oil futures analyst in Dubai, a currency trader in Vancouver and a market analyst in London. She now lives with her husband and two children in Zug, Switzerland. Woman Master is her extraordinary first novel.
