Rob Sawyer was born in Southampton in 1959. Copious amounts of tea drunk by his parents and neighbours gave rise to a burgeoning collection of PG Tips tea cards and after a brief flutter with butterflies he concentrated on birds inspired by trips with his uncle. After becoming a long haired yob in the 1970s, as predicted by the same uncle, and substituting birds for planes, the 1980s saw a dramatic return to the avian world whilst suffering from writer's block and looking for inspiration out of a window in Cambridge. Spanning over 50 years, 'Birduder 344' starts in 1959 with a big white bird (not his mother) and ends in 2011 with a big brown one. In between are the trials and tribulations of an aspirational but useless birdwatcher. He still lives in Southampton with his wife, two children and Charlie the Guinea Pig.
