The 'Pistis Sophia' is arguably the most important Gnostic document we possess. Dated as early as the second century AD, this Coptic manuscript was found in Egypt and, until the discovery of the Nag Hammadi Library, constituted the major source of unbiased knowledge on the Gnostic faith. This ancient text relates that Jesus remained in the world for a further eleven years after his resurrection, and taught his disciples the secret doctrine of initiation, in obedience to the Divine Will, which instructed Him to reveal the highest mysteries of salvation to humanity. The book is remarkable for its deeply mystical teaching, its description of the spiritual hierarchies, its belief in reincarnation, and the comprehensive account it gives of the ascent and descent of the human soul. It is an extraordinarily comprehensive body of doctrine and, among a host of other insights, grants us a new perspective on Baptism, the Psalms, the role of women in the church, and the basic teachings of the New Testament.

George Robert Stowe Mead was born in Peckham, Surrey, to his father Colonel Robert Mead and his mother Mary. He showed academic potential at a young age while attending King's School, Rochester, and upon entering college, began the study of mathematics before switching his interests to the classics at St. John's College and Cambridge. Upon graduating, Mead took up the profession of teaching and settled into a public school master position.
While studying the classics in the university, Mead became interested in eastern religion through the works of Alfred Percy Sinnett. Following this interest led Mead to contact the then active Theosophical Society of London, headed by the renowned Madame Blavatsky. Mead left his position as a school master to become the secretary of the society full time, where he contributed intellectually in the fields of philosophy, Gnosticism, and Hermeticism. After becoming active in the society, Mead migrated in interests from that of eastern practices to a western focused attention in Christianity and Neoplatonism. In 1909, Mead founded the Quest Society, which planned to be an undogmatic investigation of comparative religion. The main activity of the society was in publishing The Quest: A Quarterly Review from 1909-31.
Mead died in London, England on September 28, 1933.
The Pistis Sophia is a gnostic book thought to have originated from the 4th century C.E. It focuses first on the risen Christ teaching his disciples plus the two Mary's about the lower mysteries and then goes on to explain the higher mysteries of gnostic belief. The figure of Sophia is prevalent in this text.
