Synopsis

Oswald Harcourt Davis joined the Corps of Royal Engineers in 1916 to become a despatch rider. He was allocated a Triumph motorcycle at Abbeville France on 18th July 1916 and was attached to the ANZACs for the duration of the war which saw him motorcycling around the Somme and Ypres Salient areas. He won his military medal at Messines. As a poet and novelist he wrote a number of books all of which have been published. He also wrote articles to the Daily Mail, the Times, Punch, Country Life and the Birmingham Post. The only outstanding item for publishing is his war diary. In his war diary he mentions the articles that the Daily Mail printed and the fact that he was paid 30/- for each contribution.

The first (and only) Great War diary of a despatch rider that takes us through the entire journey from recruitment in 1915 to demobilisation in 1919. Philip Holdway-Davis is the great-nephew of Oswald HarcourtDavis MM Philip previously served with the Honourable Artillery Company, Royal Engineers and Royal Green Jackets The author is planning an Oswald s Triumph touring map so that motorcycle clubs can follow in Oswald s tyre treads and see the main WW1 sights on the Western Front 100 years on.
