This book is designed to explore key questions surrounding faith, philosophy, science, ture and social progress by celebrating the life and thought of tural leaders from Rugby School (estd. 1567).


Some of the most distinguished historians, philosophers, social commentators and religious commentators are alumni of Rugby School. In this collection of essays, contributors explore the most important values that guide and challenge us today, by reflecting on the achievements of these tural heavyweights.


This collection is edited by Patrick Derham, the current Headmaster of Rugby School.

Biographie de l'auteur

Patrick Derham has been Head Master of Rugby School since September 2001. After studying History at Cambridge he taught at Cheam and Radley before becoming Head Master of Solihull School in September 1996. Passionate about widening access Patrick set up the Arnold Foundation for Rugby School in 2003 which provides a boarding education at Rugby to under-privileged children and was instrumental in the setting up of the Springboard Bursary Foundation, a new national charity closely modelled on the Arnold Foundation, in November 2012. He is also Deputy Chairman of Trustees of IntoUniversity and a Trustee of the Gladstone Library. Patrick co-edited Liberating Learning Widening Participation with Michael Worton, Vice-Provost of UCL, published by UBP in 2010. John Taylor John Taylor is Head of Philosophy and Director of Critical Skills at Rugby School. He was educated at Rising Brook High School in Stafford, and at Balliol College, Oxford, where he read Physics and Philosophy. He completed his BPhil and DPhil at Balliol, working in the philosophy of science. He taught in various Oxford colleges and was an Adjunct Lecturer in Philosophy for the International Study Centre of Queen s University. He has taught at Rugby School since 1999. He directed the Perspectives on Science project and is a Chief Examiner for the Extended Project Qualification. He has been a contributing author and co-editor of a number of textbooks and in 2012 he published Think Again: A Philosophical Approach to Teaching . He is a Visiting Fellow of the Institute of Education.
