Synopsis

Kitab al-Jami' is a comprehensive work on miscellaneous matters, particularly from the tradition of Madina as transmitted by Imam Malik. It was originally a part of the author's Mukhtasar of the Mudawwana. although it became a work in its own right and there is evidence that the author also regarded it as such. There is an extensive treatment of 'aqida, an examination of the contentious subject of bid'a - innovation in the deen, an exposition of the relative merits of hadiths and 'amal - the practice of the People of Madina- and an outline of the sira of the Prophet, peace be upon him, as well as a large number of other matters. A great deal of the book is on the noble qualities of character as exemplified by men and women who held to them under extreme political pressure, in both wealth and poverty.

Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani (310 AH/922 CE - 386 AH/996 CE) was born in Qayrawan in Tunisia, arguably one of the most important Muslim cities after Makkah and Madinah, which was always famous for learning and in particular for its staunch adherence to the school of the people of Madinah as transmitted by Imam Malik. His life was overshadowed by the Fatimid dynasty, during which he and the other teachers of Qayrawan calmly kept alive the teaching of the Book of Allah and the Sunnah. Among his other well-known works are the massive multi-volume an-Nawadir wa'z-Ziyadat and a mukhtasar-abridgement of the Mudawwanah of which only the Kitab al-Jami', a comprehensive work containing a wide variety of topics, is extant.

Abdassamad Clarke is from Carrickfergus in Ulster and studied in Edinburgh and Cairo. He was for a period Imam of the Ihsan Mosque in Chapelfield, Norwich, but now resides in rural Denmark.
